The Most Fabulous Breakfast

March 31, 2011

You’ll know by now that I’m a massive breakfast enthusiast, but I think this morning’s ensemble was possibly the nicest yet! It was a variation on my usual overnight oats. Last night I mixed together in a bowl some blueberry muesli, milled flaxseed, a mashed banana, milk and natural yoghurt. I left it in the fridge until this morning and then just popped it in the microwave on defrost for 30 seconds just to take the chill off. I topped it with some chopped strawberries and a little agave.

It doesn’t look as good as it tasted. The mashed banana mixed in was a revelation (thanks Flo) and gave the most delicious texture and subtle taste. I also love using muesli instead of regular oats. This muesli mix has dried blueberries, cranberries, raisins and goji berries, which all plumped up and became really succulent overnight.

Today was payday – yay! Unfortunately Boots the Chemist ate a good proportion of my money. OK, OK I got carried away with skincare products and splurged on some Clinique stuff. Actually, I think it’s good value, but still expensive all in one go. Despite my healthy eating and fitness habits I feel that I’ve always neglected my skin. As a teenager I never had to really worry – I had the odd spot, but not often. It was when I hit my twenties that my skin started to go downhill. I always have a few spots to contend with (I’m not moaning too much because I know that I’m lucky never to have suffered from bad acne) and my checks and jawline are really dry and have a tendency to flake. I think outdoor walking and running and regularly swimming doesn’t do it any good. I’m hoping that sticking to a skincare regime will help, although it’ll take a lot of willpower as I’ve never managed to stick to one yet.

Do you look after your skin? I also need to pay attention to my body – my legs are super dry!

My foot injury has been playing up today. If you’re catching up I have sesamoidosis, which for none medic-types like me is inflammation around the bones at the base of the big toe. In my case it’s caused because my sesamoid bone is split in two (either fractured or I might have been born like that) and is under strain from the way I walk. I’ve been prescribed orthotics to relieve the pressure on the bone and sort out my general dodgy bio-mechanics.

I’m not sure what has caused the pain – I just woke up with it today. I did walk quite a long way in London over the weekend without orthotics, so maybe that’s it. Typical of my clumsiness, I managed to bang exactly where it hurts on the bath in the way into the shower this morning, which can’t have helped! I’m seeing the podiatrist on Monday, so I’ll see what he says. Last time I had some pain (also after quite a long walk), he said not to worry too much as he’d expect some recurrence of the pain in the short term.

So glad it’s Friday tomorrow, the weekend can’t come fast enough as usual. I’m out of work early tomorrow because we’re moving offices and my computer and all my stuff is being taken at 2.30pm SmileFinding that out made my day!

Any exciting plans over the weekend?

That sounds delicious, I love overnight oats. My favourite fruit to have with them is dried mango – if you soak the mango overnight with the oats, it’s like fresh mango in the morning! Magic!

I had the opposite problem with skin – very bad skin as a teenager and acne as a young adult. Ended up having to go on Roaccutane, but it was the best thing I’ve ever done. Been acne free for five years and people always remark on my “lovely clear skin” as if it’s always been that way. It certainly hasn’t! I keep things simple – light cheap cleanser from Boots, the occasional scrub, and sunscreen as day moisturiser, rosehip oil at night. Rosehip oil is an amazing moisturiser. If you have dry skin, I recommend it!

Weekend – nothing excitng, just catching up on sleep, treating hubby to the movies, and then a long run on Sunday. Enjoying the calm before the storm, as it were!

Enjoy your early finish tomorrow! 🙂

Oh no, that’s crappy news about your foot. It sounds like walking a lot might have done it — or the running maybe? And isn’t it typical that you hit your foot right there this morning! Ow ow!

I have problems with my skin. My polycystic ovaries give me crazy hormones and monster spots, but I can’t really do much about that. I get bad dry skin too, but can’t use a lot of over the counter stuff as it’s either not thick enough / the perfume irritates my skin / it gives me spots / etc. There have been times I’ve used an emollient prescribed by the doctor. Or sometimes I use E45 too. I tried No. 7 for a while, as that’s hypoallergenic (like Clinique), but it just didn’t cut it. I’m trying Neutrogena right now. I’ll let you know!

Your oats sound delish: I’m soaking overnight oats with chia seeds, cocoa powder and cherries amongst other things for tomorrow…even more excited for them now 🙂

My skin has been one of the many aspects of my appearance to cause me distress: it was plagued with real acne when I was a teenager but thankfully has settled down to regular old spottiness now. I get really disillusioned though, because there are some people I know with atrocious diets that have the clearest, most glowing skin ever. I suppose I should stop trying to assume that food can fix everything. I had Differin and RetinA gel to use on my face when I was a teen, but it’s so harsh that I ended up with bits of dry skin flaking off and looking like something from The Mummy.

It’s really hard even now to balance things out, particularly with the chlorine element from swimming.

    Yay for an early finish!

Ouchie for banging your poor foot.
I love Clinique stuff (once I got past the nerves of actually approaching the counter staff)- I have really sensitive skin and so many things make it itch and give me rashes or flaky skin. The clinique stuff is so gentle on it (I tried all the simple stuff and even than was no good). Plus I love bonus time at boots- advantage card points and mini freebies perfect for holidays??? LOve it! That porridge looks so good – I hardly ever have banana with porridge but when I do I remember how good it is.
Hmm, weekend plans- 17 or 18 mile run. Hoping to plant some seeds. Seeing my Nan and my Mum. And watching TV 🙂

Hopefully the podiatrist (even though I don’t know what that is…) will have some reassuring news for you 🙂
And I think skincare products are like food – totally ok to splurge on for the quality!
I’m glad you liked the mashed banana in the overnight oats 😀 I love adding it now cause it adds a subtle sweetness and the texture it gives is amaze. I love the idea of using muesli instead of oats, as well! I need to try that!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend Sarah 😀

I wash my face with plain soap and only moisturize when I have to- I’m terrible about taking care of my skin!

Yummy looking oats! I used to spend a fortune on skin care and make up products but recently I’ve been cutting back and getting back to basics. I use sugar mixed with olive oil as the best body scrub, I also love Dr Organic and Naked products. Luckily my skin is miles better than it used to be, I thank all the fruit and veggies I eat!

I’m a fan of overnight oats too but only tend to have them when I’m on an early shift at work as it’s easy to eat once I get into work – must give em a go and vary the ingredients (I’m a creature of habit, oats/milk/yog/highlights chocolate powder/topped with cocoa crunch granola).

funnily enough I’ve just had a brunch (I worked very very late last night) of chocolate podge with a mashed banana in, the first time I’d done it.

I like the taste of bananas but can’t BEAR the texture, so it was a nice way to have it 🙂

Ahhh, bless you! I hope you get some good news from the podiatrist! And I have never tried overnight oats, but these look so good youve inspired me to go buy some! x

    Love overnight oats 😀

I used to buy premium only make up and skincare and while I loved them, my bank balance didn’t!

I believe a lot of skincare is down to diet. My skin does suffer though when I just babywipe my make up off instead of having a proper wash but half the time I just need my bed, quick!

Oooh, that sounds so painful; will they be able to sort it out?
Your breakfast looks amazing to me; can I come round? 🙂
And I do try to look after my skin because I never used to wear suncream as a teenager and am really fair so I got burnt too many times – not good! I neglect my legs too but when I remember, I use the Soap and Glory stuff because it’s lovely – also in Boots and pricey though!
