Orchard Tea Gardens

July 2, 2011

Today in Cambridge has been my idea of the perfect weather – around 22oC, sunny with a few high clouds and a little bit of a breeze. If every day could be like this I would be very happy (maybe with some overnight rain to water the plants and crops). We decided to make the most of the good weather and walk to the Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester. Like the geek that I am I wore my Garmin, so I know with some accuracy that to get to the garden is 3.25 miles from Peter’s house. We met up with Peter’s brother and his girlfriend and walked slowly along the river.

It was idyllic, with lots of punts on the river, people having BBQs and picnics and a surprising number of people swimming in the Cam.

Unfortunately by the time we got there and queued up for about 20 minutes (it’s a really popular place) we’d missed lunch service. I decided to have a fruit scone with some cherry jam and call that lunch.

The scone was huge and I struggled to finish it. It not very “intuitive eating”, but I’d paid a lot of money for it and I wasn’t going to let it defeat me. On the plus side, it’s several hours later now and I’m not in the least bit hungry. We hung out in the garden for ages before walking back.

In total we walked 6.5 miles, which is probably the furthest I’ve walked since I was diagnosed we a broken sesamoid bone. It felt OK until I was halfway home and it started to hurt. I am limping around a bit now, but from previous experience I should recover quite quickly. It’s strange that I can run a 10k without any pain, but walking more that 4 miles causes be problems – I think it’s to do with the different way in which my foot strikes the ground when I’m walking. It’s good that I can run fine, but frustrating because I love to walk. I am making progress though because the distance I’m able to walk has definitely increased.

Is it sunny where you are? If so, how have you been enjoying it?

Haha i love that you refused to let the scone “defeat” you! That sounds like something i would say 🙂 It is true though that you sometimes really feel like you need to get value if you pay a lot in a cafe!
I hope you start to feel better soon too, sounds like a lovely day.

Mmm the scones looks delicious. You can’t beat a scone and cup of tea! The sun has been in and out all day here, unfortunately I had to work but am going to walk to town in a bit to enjoy the last of the sunshine, and a glass of wine! 🙂 enjoy the rest of it!

Well done for defeating the scone and getting your money’s worth. I think that’s the Yorkshire in me speaking. I’m sat inside, but I did venture outside to go for a run. We’re planning to go to the seaside in the afternoon tomorrow, so hopefully it will be sunny again.

Oh wow it looks absolutely stunning in Cambridge on a day like today. I’ve only been once on a university open day so I didn’t see all of it but it was gorgeous. I hope you start to feel better soon, injury sure is a horrible thing and really brings you down but it looks like you’re staying positive which is great 🙂
Today I just wandered around town because it was so gorgeous and I went to the market to stock up on my fruit and veg.

That place is BEAUTIFUL! And that scone does look massive but also pretty delicious – I totally would’ve eaten the whole thing too – full or not! 🙂

Glad you had such a wonderful day – sorry you were left a little sore, but it’s good you’re making progress!

It was definitely sunny by us yesterday and we had awesome day by the pool 🙂

Walking by a river and a scone for lunch? How very English 😉 All that’s missing are strawberries and cream.

It is indeed sunny where I am and I’ve been enjoying the weather by riding my road bike a lot: it’s a bit hot for anything else and I tend to melt in the heat.

    xxx
