My Name’s Sarah and I’m a Technology Addict

August 11, 2011

Hello everyone! I hope you’ve been having a great day so far. Mine got off to a fabulous start with a gorgeous berry smoothie. I still don’t have any spinach (I don’t know how I’m surviving quite frankly), so this isn’t a green monster.

In the blender went:

  • 1 banana
  • cup frozen summer fruits
  • cup oat milk
  • tablespoon milled flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons pea protein isolate

I topped with some peanut flour sauce (peanut flour, water and honey) and a tablespoon of muesli. I made the sauce a little bit thin, but it tasted lovely – I just need to reduce the amount of water I use next time.

I’m only just getting into smoothies really, but I’m starting to see the benefits. They are so quick to make and the flavour possibilities are endless! They also make a brilliant start to the day – I felt light and energised. I was definitely ready for a snack 3 hours later, which was fine, but I would perhaps add some oats or more cereal into the mix if I wanted it to keep me going for a bit longer.

Today I want to discuss something that I think most bloggers will suffer from – an addiction to technology.

I’ve never been much of a techie. In fact Peter gasped in amazement that I was even able to set up my blog, post everyday and manage it without too many hitches (WordPress is mostly very easy to use, so it’s not such a miracle).

I declared that I was never going to get a smartphone because all I did with my phone was make calls and send text messages. Oh, and I definitely couldn’t see the point of Twitter – recording the minutiae of my life in 140 characters? No thanks! I did have Facebook because I was at uni in 2004 when it first came out and it was a great way to stalk random boys acquaintances.

I’ve changed my tune now though. Ever since I started my blog at the beginning of the year, I’ve been sucked in and I’m now the proud owner of a technology addiction. It all started when I discovered Google Reader – fantastic, but so annoying at the same time. I very quickly got obsessed with reading every post that popped up in my reader and if I don’t read them for a day I end up with over 100 unread items. Every day I discover new blogs, which all provide a fantastic contribution to the community, but it’s getting more and more difficult to read them all.

Then I changed my mind about smartphones – I could read posts on the go on the Google Reader app! Once I had a smartphone I thought that I may as well get Twitter. I’m thinking about quitting my job just so I can read through all the posts I follow and fully participate in Twitter.

Of course I am joking, but I think I need to learn to put my phone away every now and then, turn my laptop off and live life. My phone in particular is intruding a little bit too much, to the point that I wake up the middle of the night and start trawling through Google Reader and I can’t stop scrolling through my Twitter feed at work. I really think it’s time to stop these bad habits, so I pledge to:

1. Put my phone away from my bed at night, so that I’m not tempted if I wake up.

2. Only look at my phone during breaks at work.

3. Put my laptop away at least an hour before bedtime.

Do you think that you’re addicted to technology?

What strategies do you have for switching off from the on-line world?

Oh yes – and follow me on Twitter if you don’t already @picnicsarah

Oh, I am the same – totally addicted – I think these are really good strategies, I am not a good sleeper and often find myself on Twitter at 4am! Can’t be good and really annoys D too.

I definitely addicted to technology and have unashamedly been so for a while, but it usually takes me a while to jump on a bandwagon. I didn’t join facebook until 2007, haven’t joined twitter yet because I’m scared no-one will read my tweets Wail!, tumblr and flickr are still a mystery to me, I’ve only just had google reader revolutionise my life, and don’t have a smart phone yet but I’m going to get one when my normal phone finally dies.
I got on the blogging bandwagon fairly early and had one about living abroad in 2004 or 2005 but I deleted it in a fit of madness in 2007 with only having saved 1 post, something I regret and am glad I did in equal measures. Since it was based on a diary I kept while abroad I when I have time I may tidy it up some day and republish it to be more about the history and culture of the place with photos than stories about what I and my friends did every day.

I have definitely become more addicted since starting my blog, particularly on my phone as I have wordpress/reader/bloglovin/twitter all on here. I definitely get sucked in once I’m on my laptop too and can spend hours reading blogs. I banned myself from looking at my phone during work unless I’m on my break and it made me much more productive. Once uni starts back I’ll have to be very strict with myself in lectures!
I like smoothies but they never fill me up no matter what I put in them.

I hol amy hands up … I spend way too much time on my laptop & phone. I’m thinking of trailing a “technology free” day once a week.

Oh lol! You sound exactly the same as me, I always thought smartphones were daft, until I started blogging, now I am surgically attatched to my blackberry!

Haha! I laughed out loud when you mentioned quitting your job to dedicate more time to Twitter!

Since the creation of my blog, I TOTALLY feel like this too! Google Reader is totally an addiction and I LOVE sitting down and reading through all my blogs. Fortunately I have not gotten a smartphone yet, but feel like that may be changing very soon… :X

I am a bit compulsive with blogs- I feel like I should comment on every post I read, and do not want the google reader to get too full. I like facebook but I use it more for photos and also the messages to arrange social things (better than texts and emails as we can all see all the replies). I use it mostly when I am supposed to be doing work! I don’t have a smartphone but I think for me that is good as the only time I would check would be at lunch time at work when I have a load of work to do anyway!

I have compulsive GR tendencies too. I “marked all as read” for the first time the other day when it was all getting out of control. I then went back and just read my favourite blogs.

LOL! I reach for the phone before I even reach for my glasses!

I think I may be addicted! I never thought I would want a smartphone- in fact, I was really against it! My family all got them so I went ahead and got one too, and I’m not going to lie… it’s really handy! Addicting, but handy!

it’s almost trendy to be a technology whore (as i like to call it) lol… it can definitely go overboard tho. i like to think i keep a pretty good balance now and then..i try to draw the line at having dreams of blogging and facebook and internet (thats my guide to tell me to ease up a bit) haha

    xoxo

I don’t think I’m a full blown addict, but I definitely would have trouble quitting tech cold turkey!

Yikes, i never heard of google reader but I think I better not look as I’m bad enough already!
I was the same as you about twitter too but all of a sudden I ‘got’ it and now I’m addicted to that too. My poor hubby hates my laptop

Haha, I love google reader too! I also have far to many unread items in my list, I tend to star the ones I want to read and then delete the rest unfortunately! I do love my technology, I couldn’t survive without my iphone and my shuffle and the thought of being without my laptop brings me out in a cold sweat! 😉

I really couldn’t live without my iPhone now or internet access- it’s sad but true. Google reader si a God send. I don’t lnow how I survived without it for so long! 🙂
