What I Ate Wednesday #13

Happy What I Ate Wednesday everyone! As usual my Google Reader is bursting with yummy posts for me to paw over later – I love indulging my nosy side and reading about what other people eat. I think WIAW is such a brilliant way to get recipe inspiration and new ideas for meals and snacks. It also reminds me that variety and diversity is a good thing – there is no one “right” way to eat.


This week WIAW nearly didn’t happen for me. I took Monday off work to recover from the half marathon, so I’ve been a day behind myself. I had a sudden moment of panic yesterday afternoon when I realised it was Tuesday and I hadn’t taken any photos of my food. Luckily I remembered just in time, so this is a mish-mash of yesterday’s and today’s eats.


I started the day with a 20 minute strength and core workout. I stuck to upper body exercises because my legs are still a little sore, but soooo much better after I spent some time with my new foam roller yesterday.

Breakfast saw the return of the smoothie. Last week I had porridge for breakfast most mornings in order to increase my carb intake before the race. I really missed smoothies though. For me, they’re the perfect start to the day – light, but filling.


Today’s creation was a banana and plum number.

  • Frozen banana
  • 2 ½ frozen diced plums
  • Handful of spinach
  • 2 tablespoons pea protein powder
  • Tablespoon hempseed
  • Teaspoon maca powder
  • ½ teaspoon xantham gum
  • ½ cup Kara coconut milk
  • 1 ½ cups water

I’d run out of muesli, so this was sans toppings. It wasn’t as tasty or as photogenic without my beloved cereal, so I rushed out at lunchtime to buy some more!

Snacks (throughout the day)


I was really hungry today, so all these were eaten, plus a home-grown (by my Dad) pear and a packet of Bear Cherry Pie granola. The dried apricots and pumpkin seeds provided a good dose of iron.



For lunch I had one of my all-time favourite combinations – boiled egg and rice. I also mixed in some sweetcorn, diced cucumber and red pepper.


Now we’re firmly in autumn I constantly crave warming and comforting meals in the evening. Last night I made a spicy vegetable and chickpea stew.


In the mix:

  • Small sweet potato
  • Carrot
  • Leek
  • Mushroom
  • Cauliflower
  • Swiss chard
  • Chickpeas
  • Chilli powder, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper

After dinner I had a couple of dark chocolate batons and some oats and coconut milk. These were consumed too quickly for a photo Winking smile

What are you’re favourite food combinations?

For me it’s definitely egg & rice, beetroot & goats cheese, banana & peanut butter.

    Beets and goats cheese is one of my favourite combo’s too, mmmmm. Eggs and salt, although I’m not sure that technically works but they are made for eachother!!

    That’s a hard one! Probably banana/almond butter or coconut butter and jam… or mushrooms, spinach and pesto!
    That stew looks delicious and perfect for autumn, although it’s so mild here now; the weather can’t make its mind up!

    It’s definitely the weather for stew! I’m planning to make one with herby dumplings this weekend 🙂
    I love the Nakd bars too! My favourite flavour is cocoa orange. I’ve never tried the banana bread one, but it sounds lush!

    Ah your dinner looks so lovely and comforting for this rather grey weather!
    That nakd banana bar sounds good, as does the granola, I might have a search for both this weekend 🙂
    For me my absolute favourite food combination is apple and cinnamon! I also like banana with nutella, caramelized red onions and melted cheese, mushrooms and tomatoes, squash and anything 😛 the list goes on!

    I finally got some boiled eggs prepped for the week, and I love having them as a quick snack or salad add-on.

    That banana bread bar sounds great!

    Favorite food combos? I love almond butter or nutella and gram crackers at the moment! Yummy!

    My favorite food combination is spice and something smooth. So like curry and avocado or sweet potato and cayenne.

    That stew looks yummy- love the idea of sweet potato in it 🙂
    Peanut butter and chocolate is a good combo!
    Or cinnamon and apples.

    Gosh I have loads of favourite combos, apple and peanut butter, cherries and almond butter, pear and ginger, honey and sea salt and last night I had some dried apricots with tahini and dark chocolate – it was amazing and nutrient packed! I know what you mean about wanting warm comforting food on an evening right now, your stew sounds lovely 🙂

    Ha! I love lots of food combos that I just love. Coconut and strawberries, blueberries and pears, carob and beet root, cherries and dark chocolate, orange and walnuts, apples and cinnamon, dates and PB…way too many to list! 🙂

    I agree with banana and PB for sweet combinations, and I think I’d choose either nutritional yeast and miso or nutritional yeast and ketchup for savoury. Clearly, I have highly refined tastebuds 😉

    And a smoothie without toppings? It’s like xmas without Santa!

    Egg and watercress is one of my favourite combinations. Oh and avocado and carrot.

    Can I say red wine and cheese too or is that not quite in the spirit of things 😉

    Mmm your stew looks lovely!! I have never seen a banana bread nakd bar before – I’m sure I would love that one 🙂

    I love salmon and spinach combo, beetroot and goats cheese, chocolate and coffee….mhmm
    I love nakd bars! During my London Yoga teacher training we found a huge box of the apple cinnamon one next to a supermarket on the street. they were off date by a day and still packed and sealed in a big carton. we basically ate nakd bars for 3 months- every day! which one is your favourite kind?
