Ladies Who Lunch

August 13, 2011

Hello! I hope everyone is having a fantabulous weekend so far (either my spell-checker is broken, or fantabulous is actually a word).

I’ve been shopping with my Mum in Chester today, which is one of my all time favourite activities. My Mum is the best shopping buddy ever – she understands that every shopping trip has got to start with a coffee and should always include lunch, she’s fantastic at sniffing out bargains, she is honest when I try stuff on, and best of all she sometimes treats me to nice clothes.

The best thing about shopping is having a nice lunch to reward ourselves for a hard morning of traipsing around. I don’t go to Chester all that often now, and I know that a load of new restaurants and cafes have popped up recently, so I checked out Trip Adviser to find somewhere we haven’t been before. Zuger’s Tea Rooms was highly recommended, so we decided to head down to the Amphitheatre and try it out.

It just looked like an ordinary cafe inside, although my eyes were immediately drawn to the gorgeous looking cakes on display. The food however was definitely a cut above what you normally get in a cafe. Both my Mum and I had a “Brotliteller”, which was described as a DIY sandwich. It consisted of a bread roll, salad, a slice of melon and then a filling – I had smoked salmon and Mum had emmenthal cheese.

This was so fresh and the smoked salmon had a lovely delicate flavour rather than a deep smokiness that can sometimes blow your socks off.

Zuger’s is famous for its ice-cream sundaes and neither of us could resist, although we did decide to share … which was a good job because it was huge!

This was called a Coupe Jacques, which had vanilla and strawberry ice-cream and fresh fruits. It was soooo good – I was in heaven for the 5 minutes it took me to demolish my half.

As well as buying some nice clothes in town, I also received a couple of cookbooks that I sent off for. For the month of August I’m challenging myself to follow one new recipe a month, so I thought that I should find some new recipes to explore.

I’ve had a flick through both of the books and it looks like there are some delicious recipes to try out. The trouble is that I don’t know which one to try first!

If you own either of these books, which recipes do you recommend?

Who is your best shopping buddy and why?

I’m truly exhausted after my shopping trip, so I’m going to completely chill this evening. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Those cookbooks look awesome, especially the fast food one!

    Have a happy Saturday 🙂

I own both of these, and what a tough choice! I made an amended version of Leon’s sweet potato falafel so I can highly recommend them!

What a wonderful day you are having with your mom! She sounds really quite nice! I would love that ice cream sundae!

I have both of the Leon books and I can’t remember whether this is in the second one which you have or not but the chickpea curry is amazing x

The Appetite for Reduction Easy Cheezy Sauce – it’s amazing! I haven’t heard of the other book but it looks really interesting; would like to see what’s in it.
I prefer going to buy things on my own so I can just get on with it but for more leisurely shopping, it’s one of my two or three closest friends 🙂

My best shopping buddies are my best friends and my grandmother. My mom and I do NOT shop well together 🙂

Sounds like my kinda shopping trip! To be honest, I’m not very good at shopping with other people. Although, I usually shop with my mum, which isn’t as fun as yours, but I still enjoy it.

I have Appetitie for Reduction and it’s amazing!!! I love it. There are SO many recipes in there to try. Her roasted veg thai curry is shoockingly good (but you have to follow it to a T and it’s a bit laborious). xxx

I am best at shopping alone I think! I do love the sound of the coffee (well, tea), lunch etc all included! I don’t have either of those books but they both sound fab- looking forward to seeing you make some of those recipesl
