Hunkering Down

January 5, 2012

Time is really flying this week, probably thanks to having Monday off work, but I’m still pleased that it’s Friday tomorrow. This weekend I’m meeting up with a group of friends from university for a trip down memory lane and to wave goodbye to one of them. She’s going with her husband on a round the world trip for five months! We’re going to eat in our favourite noodle bar from university and maybe have a few drinkies in our old hang-outs. It might also include a walk to work off all those noodles, depending on whether the wind ever dies down!

If it’s possible, the wind was even worse last night. It was really howling around the house and rattling the door and windows. There was a mega draft coming through the door that left me shivering, so I hunkered down with a warming spicy stew.

I love to eat stews all year round, but it was especially good on a night like that. It followed my usual stew formula – loads of veggies, some protein, some carbs, and lots of spices. This one had carrots, courgette, aubergine, leeks, mushrooms, sweet potato, chickpeas, tinned tomatoes, chilli powder, cumin, coriander powder, ginger powder and pepper. Despite the long list of ingredients it was so simple to make because I just chopped everything up without too much care and threw it into a big pan. I took the photograph before I’d finished piling it all into the bowl, but once it was all in it was overflowing … just how I like it.

On my fitness schedule for yesterday was some cross-training. There was no way that I was going outside again, so I settled for doing the 30 Day Shred. I haven’t tackled any of Jillian Michaels’ workouts for a while, so I’d forgotten how tough they were! I intended to do levels 1 and 2, but halfway through level 1 I decided that just the one level was enough to ease me back into some sort of strength training.

I strained my right pectoral minor muscle (the one between your arm-pit and collar bone) way back in May. It was sore, but I could still run, lift weights etc, so I ignored the discomfort. It refused to go away, so in December I sought help from my chiropractor and decided to let it heal by leaving off the weights and being careful in yoga. That injury is also known as “benchpresser’s shoulder” – haha … I’ve never done a bench-press in my life! It’s been feeling a lot better lately, although I can still feel some discomfort, so I decided to use very light weights for the Shred. Even that was tough and I was shocked at how much strength I’d lost in my shoulders. Also, I’d not done a push-up for months, so it was like the first time all over again.

This morning my shoulder is a little sore, but nothing major. I do have mild soreness in my bum and inner thighs, so I must have done some good with that workout. I’ll not be lifting heavy anytime soon, but I would like to do some strength training once a week while my injury continues to heal.

What do you like to eat when the wind is howling and the rain is battering against the windows?

I felt warmer just looking at that stew, I’m going to make something like that tonight I think. The wind is so bad here too, and this morning when I woke up I couldn’t believe the force that the rain was hitting my window with. I was a bit scared! Just read yesterdays post too, well doen for getting out there in this wind and running your 5k!!! I have circuits tonight so hopefully the weather will hold off for the runs.

I hope you can continue to lift with your injury, it’s amazing how fast strength goes isn’t it! I love Jilian, I did her yoga meltdown this morning and I feel pretty sore now. Hope the weather improves for your weekend!

I was going to say sweet potatoes, until I’d seen that you included them in your stew to start with! Porridge is another must – we had 90mph on Waldrige Fell today, apparrently. That was fun to run in, that’s for sure…

Jillian’s latest DVD (Ripped in 30) is an absolute killer – it makes the shred look like something by Davina McCall 😉 Careful with the injury – I hope it’s feeling okay after your shoulder-Shredding.

I hope you have a lovely time and the week-end and don’t get blown away on your walk!

I do not like the wind one bit, it stresses me from the inside out. I feel very unsettled when the wind blows like it has been.

Have a fantastic catch up with your friends.

I think that stew looks like perfect windy weather food. I love a spicy chilli or curry when the weathers like that, or of course a bowl of broth!

Glad the Shred didn’t aggravate your shoulder 🙂
When it’s cold outside I like anything with sweet potato or regular mash! Last night we had veggie sausages, mash, onion gravy and greens…..YUM! Real comfort food.

Tea and toast. Can’t go wrong with tea and toast.

That injury sounds seriously uncomfortable! My right hand has been bothering me but I found a couple of weight exercises that don’t aggravate it. It’s all about the workarounds!

If it’s freezing outside, I’m all about warm comfort food. Pasta with a nice sauce sounds perfect 🙂 I also drink tea like it’s my job!

That stew sounds lush, I lve adding spices to dishes. I quite like Bean chilli when its cold with some roasted butternut squash.

Mmm I love stews as well 🙂

I think that kind of weather would be so exciting! Only if you’re properly indoors, though 🙂 That stew looks like the perfect cold-weather food.

That stew looks yummy- I have a chickpea stew that is similar and it is so warming. I hate the sound of the wind- so much banging about- we have lost one fence panel but our neighbours have lost 4 and one of them is ripped to shreds (or planks?). I think a cup of tea and a hot water bottle is good when the weather is like that.
    Have fun with your friend.

I think that looks like the perfect food when it is so cold and miserable outside.

I love stew and chili on cold days! I hope your shoulder feels better soon – it’s so annoying when things like that happen.

Ooooh that stew looks nice 😀 i love a good hotpot or cornedbeef hash when it’s freezing outside….that and nice chunky soups.
I hope your shoulder starts feeling better soon, im sure jillian will get those muscles super strong again in no time 🙂

    Happy new year, Sarah!

Yup, it’s all about stews at the moment. in fact, I might make a massive one this weekend!

Hope you have a great weekend x

The injury sounds nasty, glad it’s progressing though… and I could never even think about doing 1 and 2 of the Shred; one’s more than enough 🙂
Hope you had a great night out and I agree, this wind’s such a nightmare!

Oh my goodness – all that food looks so incredible. I love good comfort good (soups, stews, grilled sandwiches) when it’s cold and dreary out!
