Dim Sum and a Farce
Hello! I hope everyone had a fun-filled weekend. I certainly did, and it’s not over yet because I’ve had the day off work today. Today and yesterday have actually been very chilled out, but I was busy on Saturday. It’s my auntie’s 70th birthday next month, so I met her and my Mum in London to have some lunch and see a play.
After a natter over a latte at the train station, we headed off to China Town. I was aware that it was Chinese New Year last week, but I didn’t know that there would still be celebrations in China Town. We were lucky enough to see some of them, although I didn’t get any good photographs unfortunately. This gives you a flavour of what was going on:
For lunch we went to Joy King Lau for dim sum. I’d read some good reviews of this restaurant and I’d heard that it was very popular. We were lucky that we managed to nab a table without having to queue. I’m not really sure what I’m doing when it comes to dim sum, because it wasn’t really served in the area of China that I visited. I just went for what sounded good, avoiding fish (because my Mum’s allergic) and chicken’s feet (because I’m squeamish and didn’t try them even though they were served to me every day for three months when I was in China … lame I know).
Beef, ginger and spring onion dumplings.
Vegetable dumplings.
Beef meat balls.
Steamed custard buns.
(Blurry) beef noodles.
Plus about a gallon of green tea. We managed to polish all this off between the three of us and it only came to £22, which I thought was a bargain!
We then walked around for ages trying to find somewhere to have a cup of tea, but every cafe was absolutely packed. Eventually we stumbled across a new frozen yoghurt place called Tutti Frutti that was virtually empty, probably because it wasn’t really the weather for fro-yo. The other two were sensible and had hot drinks, but I couldn’t resist having a huge tub of the cold stuff. There were so many flavours that I really had trouble choosing, but I went for green apple in the end.
We then went to the matinee performance of “One Man Two Guvnors” at the Adelphi Theatre. I’d heard so many good things about this play, so we booked tickets a few months ago. It’s a good job too because it’s completely sold out and there was a sizeable queue of people hoping for cancellations outside of the theatre. It’s transferring to Broadway in the spring with some of the current cast and transferring to another theatre in London with a different cast.
I won’t say too much about the play in case you go to see it, but basically it’s a farce with misunderstandings, innuendo and lots of physical comedy. There was also some audience participation, which were the funniest bits. I laughed so hard that I felt exhausted by the time it finished. I’m so glad that we made an effort to get tickets.
After all that excitement, the rest of the weekend has been very relaxed. I took a very chilly four mile run yesterday morning, and looking at the weather forecast I think there’s going to be a lot more where they came from over the next couple of weeks.
What were you up to this weekend?
Have you seen any plays recently?
Oh I love dim sum – I feel a trip to ChinaTown coming on! Glad you had a good time 🙂
Dim sum is awesome! What a fun way to celebrate your Auntie’s birthday! Sounds like a great play.
Oh no, the cold spell isn’t set to last is it 😦 I haven’t seen a long range forecast…frost and ice make me so sad.
I haven’t seen any plays for a long time – the length of sitting still tends to aggravate my back pain. A few years back I saw an excellent version of ‘The Tempest’ with Patrick Stewart as Prospero, and a great version of ‘The Woman In Black’ which was a lot better than the film looks to be.
I wouldn’t have eaten chicken feet either! I wouldn’t want to offend anyone, but there’s no way I would have been able to even look at them without a)crying or b)being sick. Or possibly both.
xxx
We have a Tutti Frutti here in Orlando and there’s also one in Miami! Wow– I had no clue it was international!
Andddd I used to be in plays/ musicals in high school 🙂
I adore dim sum…I’m having cravings now. 😀
Well this sounds like a rather fabulous weekend! The Chinese New Year celebrations look great and your meal looks absolutely delicious, I love spring roles and noodle dishes 🙂 The play also sounds brilliant, I haven’t seen a play in a while but I adore going to the theatre.
p.s. I tagged you in my 11 things survey 🙂
I wish I could see plays more often- I love going, but they’re so expensive! West Side Story (my favorite) was playing near me recently but tickets were over 50 dollars 😦
The last play I saw was Othello, but I normally see musicals! Although the idea of audience participation is my worst nightmare- if we ever see a comedy show we have to sit right at the back and although I enjoy it I am relieved when it ends and I was not picked on!
I loveee Dim Sum… need to get that back in my life again 🙂 I wish I could see plays more often, they are just always fantastic! The last one I saw was Little Shop of Horrors here at school
Looks like you had a great weekend! I’ve never tried Dim Sum. I totally understand why you didn’t want to try the chicken feet, ick! Glad you enjoyed the play as well!
What a great weekend you had! Your Chinese meal looks stunning… and what a bargain! I’m going to make a note of the restaurant name and make sure we visit next time we’re in London.
I would have loved to see the parade! Dim Sum is so much fun. Too much food though, unless you’re able to pass up some things which I am rarely able to do! 😉
That play sounds great… I’d love to go to the theatre more and am hoping to see War Horse this spring… the vegetable dumplings look brilliant too.
I’d have been the same, unable to resist the frozen yoghurt; it’s been snowing here all day and I still couldn’t resist the ice cream!
Glad you had a lovely weekend 🙂
